Accidents at work or in road traffic and occupational illnesses are neither fateful nor unavoidable – they always have causes. When we work together to eliminate these causes, accidents and occupational illnesses can be prevented.
The new ISSA prevention strategy for the implementation VISION ZERO is intended to design the working environment in companies, in operations, in production facilities and on construction sites so that nobody is killed at work nor suffers injuries or illnesses that are so severe that they result in the lifelong impairment of health. The strategy is based on the conviction that every accident is ultimately preventable if the right steps are taken in advance.
The benefits of a safe and healthy operation are self-evident. Successful prevention not only avoids human suffering and protects our most valuable asset – our health and physical integrity. Prevention also has a positive impact on the motivation of employees, the quality of work and products, the company image and the satisfaction of employees, managers and customers.
In short: Good prevention is more than a social obligation- it also pays off economically.Successful prevention helps companies succeed. Scientific studies of the "Return on Prevention" (ROP) prove that every Dollar invested in safety and health generates a benefit of more than two Dollars in positive effects. Investments in safety and health are also reasonable because they avoid what are often many times higher financial costs as the result of accidents, occupational illnesses, lost time or operating disruptions.
Implementing the “VISION ZERO" prevention strategy is an ambitious undertaking that requires the full dedication and participation of many. Yet, one thing is clear: Dedicated employers, executives, motivated managers and vigilant employees in the operations ultimately determine the success or failure of implementing the VISION ZERO strategy.
One thing is apparent even at first glance: One does not necessarily have to spend money in order to start improving safety and health in the operation. Simply acting with awareness and leading consistently are often all that is required. Of course, sometimes investments in safety and health are unavoidable but these will pay off. ISSA have blazed new trails in the development of this guideline. They talked to 700 executives, managers and operations experts, asking them what straightforward measures they had good experiences with and what works. Furthermore, they asked labour inspectors and prevention experts of the accident insurance prevention services about essential requirements for safe and healthy operations based on their experience and about what is practical. All of this was incorporated as well proven success factors into this guideline and is now ready for you to put into practice. They made an effort to keep the guideline streamlined and manageable. In the course of analyzing the experiences, it turned out that they can be broken down into seven key success factors, namely, the"Seven Golden Rules".
